Directed by Nishtha Jain, Drishyam is a Tamil language thriller that tells the story of a desperate man and woman in a small Indian town. Suddenly a series of mysterious disappearances occur in the town. The couple decide to find out if their neighbors have been kidnapped, when they too are targeted by someone from within their own household. With no one else willing to help them, they turn to their village chief for protection and guidance, but he is also being hunted down by someone who knows his secrets. The film is based on director Nishtha Jain's own script. The film starts with an introduction of the most important characters in the story. The protagonist, Drishya played by Vijay, is a young man with an attractive personality and great ambitions. His wife Gayathri (Priya Rajvanshi) is a homemaker with two kids and a firm understanding of their financial situation. Their friend Mridula is an intelligent woman who used to be Vijay's best friend in college but now leads a totally different life than was predicted for her back then. Their neighbors are the old Mr. Roy (Prakash Raj) and his wife, Mrs. Raghavendra (Kushboo). The middle aged couple obviously like Drishya and Gayathri but they too are in distress. Mr. Roy is a pious man who looks after the welfare of the villagers and also keeps a watch on them when needed. Earlier, he was a gangster and still has underworld connections and the police consider him an influential man. Mrs. Raghavendra is a very religious woman, who took care of all arrangements during even the most important festivals of their village, but her husband claims to be God fearing and is shown to be very strict with his family members. The story starts with this idea that there is something mysterious about their lives - no one knows for sure whether it is related to the disappearances or not. As the story progresses, a series of mysterious disappearances take place in the small village. The village has been attacked by a mysterious person who kills everyone he finds. The same thing happens to Vijay's family and friends, even when they are all at home. Drisha and Gayathri take the responsibility of ensuring that their children are safe from this enemy and start living in Mr. Roy's house to get out of reach of this situation. Mrs. Raghavendra is also very much disturbed by all this happening around them so she starts preparing for her death as per her belief about destiny. She is shown to be a very strict and traditional woman who does not understand things differently. The old Mr. Roy, on the other hand, has his own reasons for helping the couple and losses his credibility as a protector for them and they start avoiding him because of this. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Drisha was not responsible for all these events but he doesn't know about it yet.
